When investing in a Minerva kitchen, it's essential to know that one of the key materials we use when handcrafting our kitchens is hardwood.
Natural wood brings warmth, durability, and timeless beauty to your space. However, one of its unique characteristics is that it moves over time. Understanding why this happens and how it might affect your handmade kitchen can help you appreciate the nature of this beautiful material.

Why Does Solid Wood Move?
Wood is a natural, living material—even after it has been cut and crafted into cabinetry. It responds to the environment by absorbing and releasing moisture, which causes it to expand and contract. This movement is influenced by factors such as:
Humidity Changes – In higher humidity, wood absorbs moisture and expands, while in drier conditions, it releases moisture and contracts.
Temperature Variations – Fluctuations in temperature can accelerate wood movement, particularly in spaces with underfloor heating or fluctuating seasonal conditions.

How Wood Movement Affects Your Handmade Kitchen
Because hardwood is a natural material, you may notice minor changes over time, such as small gaps, hairline cracks, or slight shifts in cabinet doors. These are completely normal and do not impact the overall integrity of your kitchen; in fact, they are part of what makes solid wood so authentic and full of character.
At Minerva Design, we primarily use Oak in our kitchens, as it is strong, durable, and ages beautifully. However, at a client's request, we can also use Walnut or Ash wood, both of which bring unique tones and textures to a space.

With proper care and understanding, your handmade kitchen will remain a beautiful and enduring part of your home for years to come.
