Crafted from the ground up

The Sutton St. Nicholas project is one that holds a special place for us. Spanning the kitchen, utility room, and bathroom vanity units, it was designed for a self-built home, a house that our client constructed with his own hands. That level of personal investment in a property sets the tone for everything, and it meant that every room needed to feel as considered and crafted as the building around it. The oak frame running throughout the home gave us a natural starting point.

In the kitchen, an oak worktop ties the design back to the structure of the house, keeping the material language consistent and grounded. Rather than fitting traditional wall cabinets, open shelving was chosen to line the walls instead. It is a decision that opens the room up considerably, and the small wooden details add warmth and handmade quality that feels entirely in keeping with the home. The layout was arranged with real life in mind and is the kind of space that works just as well for a relaxed family dinner as it does for an afternoon of baking, an evening of homework, or friends gathered around with a drink in hand.

Three rooms, one vision

The kitchen cabinetry was crafted in our Bologna Collection, with the pencil beading detail showing particularly well throughout the space. The perimeter cabinetry was painted in bespoke white, a soft shade that keeps the room feeling light and open, while the island was finished in 'Iris 020', introducing a gentle contrast that gives the kitchen a focal point. Brass handles were chosen to complete the look giving a vintage quality that sits naturally alongside the classic Shaker design. It is a combination that feels timeless rather than fashionable, the kind of kitchen that will look just as right in twenty years as it does today.

The Bologna Collection continued into the utility room, where the cabinetry was painted in a deeper, richer grey that gives the smaller space a real sense of character. Often an afterthought in a home, the utility room was given the same level of care and attention as the kitchen, and it shows. The brass handles were carried through here too, keeping the two rooms connected and maintaining the warm, grounded aesthetic that runs through the whole project.

The bathroom vanity units brought the project full circle. Crafted with the same attention to detail and finished to match the wider aesthetic of the home. Aged brass fittings were used here once more, it is a small detail that makes a significant difference, giving the room a sense of belonging within the wider home rather than feeling like a separate space entirely.

Taken together, the Sutton St. Nicholas project is a fine example of what becomes possible when a home is built and designed with genuine intention. The oak frames, the carefully chosen colours, the quality of the cabinetry and the consistency of the hardware across every room all point to the same thing. A home that has been thought about deeply and put together with real pride. If you are considering taking on a larger project in your home get in touch with us today and we will be happy to help.
