Checkley Kitchen
Handcrafted in our Ferrara Collection, the main run of cabinetry is naturally lacquered Oak and features Crofts & Assinder cups, knobs and oval handles.
Canadian charm
Our client had a clear vision from the start, shaped by the years he had spent in Canada and a genuine love for the natural, unhurried aesthetic that comes with it. He wanted his kitchen to reflect that same warmth, something rooted in natural materials and honest craftsmanship rather than trend or novelty. Oak was the obvious choice, and from there the design took shape around it.
The Checkley Kitchen was crafted as part of our Ferrara Collection, a range built on the enduring appeal of classic shaker design. Clean lines and uncluttered cabinetry give the collection its character, refined and simplistic. Here, the shaker cabinetry was finished with a natural lacquer to let the Oak speak for itself, drawing out the grain and texture of the wood and giving the kitchen a warmth that feels entirely genuine.

A unique, structural challenge
The house itself set the tone from the beginning, an old cottage with aged oak beams and low ceilings, it has the kind of quiet character that takes centuries to build. The new extension brought fresh space but also an unexpected challenge in the form of a large structural pillar standing squarely in the middle of the open kitchen and dining area. Rather than working around it reluctantly, we saw it as something worth designing for.
The solution was an island built to wrap around the pillar entirely. It makes the most of every inch of the space, providing a generous worktop for cooking and preparation while incorporating storage that earns its place. A built-in bookshelf was added, somewhere to keep cookbooks and favourite reads within easy reach without cluttering the room.
Crofts and Assinder cups, knobs, and oval handles were chosen to finish the cabinetry. Their weight and texture sit naturally alongside the oak, adding a rustic quality that feels in keeping with the age and character of the building.
The finished kitchen captures exactly what our client was after. It carries the warmth and natural charm of the Canadian style he has long admired, while remaining firmly rooted in the history of the cottage it calls home. Old and new sit comfortably side by side here, held together by careful craft and a design that never lost sight of the client it was handcrafted for.
