A Historic Project

Kentchurch is a historic family home on a working estate open to the public and regularly hired for corporate events, a house that has to work as hard as it looks beautiful. When Joss came to us, the brief was ambitious: take what had once been several separate rooms and bring them together into one open-plan kitchen, dining and snug that could flex from quiet mornings to hosting a room full of guests. Joss worked closely with an architect throughout, and we joined that process early, shaping the Ferrara cabinetry around the wider architectural plan rather than fitting it in afterwards.

It was a three-year project, and that time shows in the detail. The new space opens straight onto the grounds, with a walk-in pantry hidden seamlessly within kitchen cabinetry for the entertaining this house is built for. Given the estate's eclectic, ornate decor, the challenge was to design something that felt considered and grounded rather than competing with it, a kitchen that could hold its own in a historic home without shouting over it.

Undeniable Focal Points

The walnut island and bar are the undeniable focal points of the room, drawing people in almost instinctively. They're the features guests can't resist running a hand across, bringing richness and tactility that beautifully complement the smooth painted ‘Concordia 160’ Shaker cabinetry. The contrast between the crisp painted finish and the natural grain of the walnut introduces depth and character, softening the overall scheme and creating a kitchen that feels welcoming and timeless rather than overly polished.

Aged Brass was chosen for all the handles because of the way it evolves over time. Rather than staying bright and uniform, it develops a natural patina through everyday use, making it the perfect choice for a home with so much history. Set against the walnut, the brass feels warm and it's these carefully considered material pairings that make the space feel truly complete and thoughtfully crafted.
