Crafted for gathering

Louise and Rupert are hosts through and through. With a large family and friends who are always round, they wanted somewhere everyone could gather rather than a single cook shut away in a corner. The dining room extension sits right off the kitchen, and instead of a wall between the two, a breakfast bar takes on that job. Whoever's at the hob can still be part of the table's conversation, while each space keeps its own identity.

That way of living shaped almost every decision the old Aga was brought back to life rather than replaced, and it remains the anchor of the room in an eye catching red colour. An original oak beam stayed exposed overhead, a quiet nod to the age of the house. Off to one side, a mini prep island with its own secondary hob means a sauce or extra pan can go on without anyone leaving the main action, or missing a word of what's being said around them. A neutral utility room painted in 'Somnus 050' is conveniently located just off the kitchen, providing useful additional space for laundry, storage and household appliances.

The Smaller Touches

The room takes its character from the Shaker cabinetry. Dark cupboard fronts give it a grounded, confident look while wooden accents running through keep it feeling warm rather than heavy. It works as well by evening light as it does in daylight, which matters in a space built as much for entertaining after dark as for family breakfasts.

Most people don't clock the dresser at first glance. It looks like straightforward storage, tall and panelled to match the units around it, until you open it up and it’s quietly doing the job of a proper bar without a separate drinks cabinet taking up space. Overhead, the original oak beam stayed exposed rather than being boxed away, and set against the dark units and timber detailing beneath it, it keeps a thread running back to the rest of the house, proof that a period home can be opened up and rebuilt without losing what made it feel like itself.
