Unexpected contrast

Guests booking a stay on the Kentchurch estate would reasonably expect traditional styling throughout, so the owner wanted something different for this kitchen, a clear break from the rest of the properties. Milan, our most popular contemporary collection, delivered exactly that contrast between heritage and modern design. Set against a period building, it could easily have felt at odds with its surroundings, but stood in the room it simply feels right, giving Upper Lodge an identity all of its own.

An elegant walnut finish ties the whole kitchen together, and every element had to earn its place. The bespoke sized island does much of that work. Built to the room's exact dimensions rather than a standard size, it houses secret drawers that free up worktop space guests can actually use, without the storage ever being on display.

The range sits snugly into the original chimney breast, keeping the traditional features of the house on show even inside a thoroughly contemporary room. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing that stops a modern kitchen from feeling disconnected from the building around it. Strip lighting under the cabinets adds warmth of its own, and open shelving set against the blue tiles breaks up the cabinetry nicely, keeping the room from feeling too heavy in any one spot.

An integrated bin and a spice rack are tucked into the modern cabinetry, small enough to go unnoticed but exactly the sort of thing that makes a self-catering kitchen feel properly thought through rather than just fitted out.
