Celebrating the character

Introducing the Deerhurst Kitchen, another example of the skilled British craftsmanship at the heart of what we do. Soft, off-white painted Shaker cabinetry from our Ferrara collection sets a calm, timeless tone throughout the space, while the island brings drama with a waterfall Quartz worktop featuring rich gold veining, a perfect area for hosting the clients large family.

What really sets this project apart is how sensitively it works with the character of the original building. The exposed stone walls and reclaimed oak beams have been left completely untouched, letting natural light flood in through the deep-set windows, with the cabinetry scribed to the walls. A traditional farmhouse sink, copper pendant lighting, and a built-in wine rack complete the space. The result is handcrafted kitchen that celebrates the history of the home.

A traditional joinery technique

Scribing is a traditional joinery technique that allows cabinetry to be carefully shaped to the exact contours of a wall, creating a seamless fit where a straight factory edge would normally leave gaps. From the beginning, Caroline wanted to celebrate the character of the property rather than hide it. In a home like this, that meant hand-scribing the outer frame of the Shaker cabinetry to follow every curve and undulation of the original stonework.

The finished wine rack features solid oak dividers that hold each bottle at the perfect angle, framed by joinery that sits perfectly flush against the stone. It takes more time and skill, but the result speaks for itself. Instead of looking like a later addition, the wine rack feels as though it has always been part of the house.
